Sadly, this will be one of a few releases of basketball cards by Panini because of the short NBA season. Again, there are redemption cards in this product, and it’s rumored that they won’t be redeemable until November since Panini will try to get the autographs in the off-season. There will be no “rookie” base cards this year, since they decided to go with ‘XRC’ cards and put a full lineup of all the rookies next year. That will include both 2011-12 and 2012-13 draft classes. For $100 per box you get two autographs and one memorabilia card. These boxes are loaded with veteran autographs. If you like basketball, buy this product as it will be one of the few basketball sets released this year.
Now, that being said, this can be more than a bit confusing for people. So, we turn to Panini to answer some of the questions people have. First, the checklist for all 2011 Rookie Redemptions will be determined via a live drawing on Panini’s blog on October 29, 2012 (9 PM CST). This will cover three products, including Limited (the other two are 2011-12 Gold Standard and 2011-12 Past & Present), with the 2012 checklist itself coming from the 2012 NBA draft coming up on June 28.
All of the 2011 redemptions will be autographed, although the 2012 redemptions will not be, and each set’s redemptions will be separate from the other products. The reasoning behind this, of course, has to do with the lockout that shortened the NBA season and made it nearly impossible to have rookie cards in 2011-12 products. Also, as a happy circumstance, it makes the 2012-13 products stronger in comparison. So while this product won’t have direct cards of Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard and Kenneth Faried, there will be redemptions for autographed cards of those players for people to look forward to.
