Card Design:

Absolute Memorabilia has not really changed much at all over the past ten years or so.  The cards are very foil-based, and the inserts are aimed at having relics and autographs both on them.   Now, that being said, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a solid-looking set.  The base cards focus on the players with a cloudy background while the retired cards feature black and white photography.  The Star Gazing and NBA Icons are both very nice looking inserts, although Hoopla is too obviously set up as a ‘Panini standard’ insert.  The RPM cards are decent, but nothing special, and the Tools of the Trade jumbos are nice.

Score:  3/5

Pizzaz:

Again, Absolute is always (and will always) be a gamble.  This particular box hit fairly well with Blake Griffin and the Ray Allen patch #’d to 10.  That doesn’t mean every box will have something that nice, although given that a lot of the materials and autograph sets are rather low-numbered, you’ve got decent odds at hitting something numbered to 25 or less.  Unlike football though, not many basketball jerseys have huge multi-colored swatches, which may detract from the ‘prime’ factor.

Score: 3/5

Overall Score:  3/5

Value:

If you’re buying Absolute Memorabilia by the box or the case, you’re generally hoping to hit one or two cards which will make back most of your money, or stuff that you can trade to get players that you want.  This is fine, honestly, if that’s what you want.  While I’d love to see a full master base set (all 185 cards), assembling this would be insanely difficult and expensive.  This, as with any other ‘Gamble’ product, is really aimed at people who want hits, and player or team collectors.  There’s honestly something for everyone, but I’d still say that this would be best to pick up singles of.  Admittedly, I haven’t looked to see if the retail version has specific inserts as Panini has been doing, which may change this to adding retail to it.
